—展期及地點:2024 年 2 月 22 日至 2 月 25 日,本校百齡堂;

Illuminating the path forward: Celebrating the Art of Fang Zhaoling
In the Centennial Hall hang 36 pieces of majestic Chinese paintings and calligraphy
brimming with joy and optimism. Young docents in traditional light blue cheongsams greet
their guests with a bright smile as they guide them through the many works on display,
from sublime landscapes to bold and dynamic brushwork. No, this isn’t the M+ or the Palace
Museum. It’s “Art in True Light”, an annual art exhibition now in its second year.
This year’s exhibition explores the ink art of Fang Zhaoling, one of the most prolific modern
female Chinese artists in Hong Kong. Her paintings often depict mountains and a distinct
path to the summit, symbolizing the challenges one would encounter in life while inviting
viewers to find strength on the journey to surmount these difficulties. In her art, Fang
beautifully captures the essence of finding a way forward amidst the rugged terrains,
imparting a sense of resilience and optimism in the face of adversity.
True Light fully embraces the concept of “school museum” and takes immense inspiration
from Fang and her depiction of a path to the top as the school draws its contours in art
education. Under the current curriculum, True Light girls are introduced to the museum
industry, while those who guide visitors at the entrance are given docent training. In their
path to providing artistic enrichment to students, the school also invited sand artist Edith
Wu to reinterpret some of Fang’s works, the crossover truly pushing the boundaries of art
and innovation.
“China’s rich and expansive history of art spans thousands of years, yet within the vast
tapestry less than a hundred female artists are etched in our memory, ” tells the principal to
some 600 students sitting in the hall. “Fang Zhaoling is certainly one of those names that
serves as a beacon of light. Despite her family’s misfortunes and the turmoil of war, she
persevered and pursued her passion for art. Even in her later years, she sought to elevate her
work and venture into new paths of artistic expression. Let her art remind us of her diligence
and unwavering strength as we strive to overcome challenges and forge our own paths.”
“A life journey of painting: The ink art of Fang Zhaoling” will run from February 22nd to 25th
at the Centennial Hall in The True Light Middle School of Hong Kong. Gracing the grand
opening ceremony on February 23rd with their presence are esteemed guests of honor, the
honorable Mr. Bernard Chan, and Dr. David Fang, the artist’s son. The school warmly
welcomes students of all three sections, parents, alumni, and members of the community to
walk the path of Fang’s artistic journey together.
