FIRST LEGO League 2023-2024 / 2024 FIRST LEGO League Asia Open Championship

Our school participated in the FIRST LEGO League 2023-2024 held on 6th July. Two teams of nine S3 students were sent to take part in the event. They took on the challenges in the robot game, innovation project, and robot design presentation.

One of our teams was recognized as the Overall 2nd Runner-up in the competition. The team was awarded the 2nd Runner-up position in robot design. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our students, as well as the support provided by our teachers.

Following our teams’ success in the competition, the students were selected to represent Hong Kong at the 2024 FIRST LEGO League Asia Open Championship. The competition took place from 2nd to 4th August at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

At the Championship, apart from robot games and presentations, our students also had the opportunity to set up a booth to exchange ideas with participants from other countries. We were delighted to learn that our school’s team had been awarded the Third Place, a remarkable achievement considering the level of competition.

Student’s reflection:

“Participating in the FIRST LEGO League this past year was a truly rewarding experience. The key learning for me was the importance of perseverance and trying again every time we faced setbacks. Our robot programming went through countless adjustments as we encountered issues and refined our approach. Whether it was troubleshooting problematic code or redesigning components of the robot, we were constantly improving. But with each failure, we learned something new, and all the improvement we made was essential to our success. This persistence to make better performance is a skill I will carry with me going forward.

We ultimately secured the Third Place at the Asia Open competition, which was an incredibly proud moment for our team. I believe the key factor that led to this recognition was our strong collaboration. Working closely with my teammates, leveraging each other’s unique talents and perspectives, was crucial to our success. We learned to communicate effectively and truly operate as a group working towards a common goal.

One of the most memorable parts for me was the opportunity to exchange ideas and perspectives with students from other schools in the competition. Hearing their approaches to the various challenges and gaining insight into their unique cultural backgrounds, challenged me to think in new ways and consider different possibilities that I hadn’t previously. It was an experience that reminded me there is always more to learn, even from those you might not expect.

My advice for students participating FIRST LEGO League in the future would be to embrace the learning process, stay open-minded, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reach out to past participants, coaches, and mentors – their guidance can be valuable. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the journey. The skills and experiences you gain, from problem-solving to teamwork to creative thinking, will be precious.”
