Fifteen S1 to S3 students have participated in a guided tour organised by the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 15 April 2023. The theme of the visit was “Transformation in Hong Kong’s Popular Culture – Mong Kok”, which provided an opportunity for our students to experience the dynamic and diverse popular culture of Hong Kong. First, we visited the Sai Yeung Choi Street Nam to learn about the development of the cinema culture that has been an important part of Hong Kong’s entertainment industry for decades. Next, we headed over to Shanghai Street to explore the revitalized tenement buildings which now house trendy cafes, boutiques, and art spaces. The area has become a hub for young artists and creative entrepreneurs. Finally, we visited the Goldfish Market and Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok to explore the characteristic of the culture of hawker stalls in Hong Kong. On the whole, the study tour has fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hong Kong’s unique and dynamic popular culture.
