Reading Week Activities: A Journey Through Books and Values
The Reading Week at our school was a delightful blend of exploration, inspiration, and fun. This year’s theme, “Picture Books – A Window into Values,” resonated throughout the various school activities, leaving a lasting impact on our students.
Picture Books Shared by the Library Society
The Library Society started the week by sharing a collection of picture books. These books were new to many students, who found great joy in exploring them as a group. This activity not only introduced them to new stories but also encouraged them to try something new together.
Empowerment Through Picture Books with Miss Fa La La
We were honored to have Miss Fa La La join us to share her journey of how picture books empowered her. She recounted her experiences of sharing picture books in a public library and expressed how heartwarming it was to share these stories with little kids. Her talk was inspiring and emphasized the power of books in shaping young minds.
Environmental Values with Yeah Man
Environmental KOL Yeah Man (野人,莫皓光) was another highlight of the week. He shared his values, how they were formed, and how they guided his life in terms of environmental protection and life philosophy. His session perfectly echoed this year’s theme: “Picture Books – A Window into Values.” Students were particularly inspired by one of Yeah Man’s popular values: 慢慢做係興趣,趕住做係返工, which emphasizes taking time to enjoy one’s interests rather than rushing as if it’s a job.
Book Fair by Book Cottage (讀書好棧)
Book Cottage hosted a book fair that was a hit among students. Led by their Chinese teachers, students visited the book fair during lessons, filling the fair with book lovers. This activity fostered a love for reading and allowed students to explore a wide range of books.
Interactive Game Booth
Adjacent to the book fair, a game booth was set up by the Chinese ambassador and the Library Society. The collaboration between the two groups made the activity more engaging, and many students eagerly queued to participate in the games.
English Storybooks by S1 Students
English storybooks produced by our S1 students were displayed in the library. These budding authors formed groups to narrate their stories to our Primary 3 students on the second day of the Reading Week. This interaction was both educational and enjoyable, bridging the gap between different grade levels.
Drawing with Illustrator Charlotte Lui
The final day of the Reading Week featured a session with illustrator Charlotte Lui from @Moving Drawing. She shared her drawing experiences and, much to the delight of the students, created a picture of the audience. Her session added a creative flair to the week and provided students with an unforgettable experience.
Reading Week was a resounding success, filled with enriching activities that highlighted the importance of reading and the values it instills. We look forward to more such engaging events in the future!
