On July 28, 2024, five students from our school participated in the annual Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (SSPC). Their project focuses on developing an IoT-based wildfire detection and prediction system.

For the competition, the students were required to undertake several crucial tasks. They built the hardware device and coded the software to run it. Additionally, they created a poster to showcase their work, and presented their ideas to a panel of expert judges. The participants also had the valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from students and teachers from other schools at the event.

Student contestants:

Student’s reflection:

“I have learned to cooperate well with my teammates. We’ve learned to leverage each other’s strengths and find compromises. For example, some of us are stronger at elaborating on and introducing the product, while others are more familiar with coding and product design. We were able to effectively exercise our strengths while helping each other out simultaneously.

We encountered several setbacks throughout the development process. During testing, we found a major limitation with one of the sensors under certain conditions. Addressing this issue was not feasible given the scale of our project. We therefore chose to honestly acknowledge the limitation and explain how we supplement the system with other sensors.

The most memorable part was undoubtedly the presentation day, marking the completion of our long journey. I was part of transforming our initial idea into a functional prototype, witnessing the product’s evolution every step of the way. Presenting to the judges brought immense pride. Although we didn’t advance further, this invaluable experience will stay with me for years.

SPCC is a competition that gathers a wide variety of bright minds with their creative ideas to to positively impact the world. My humble advice would be to just enjoy and explore this eye-opening experience. It is always fun to learn and meet with people sharing the same passion as you.”
